Nissan eyes V8 Supercars chance for Krumm, Ordonez
Nissan sportscar racers Michael Krumm and Lucas Ordonez are being lined up for 2014 Bathurst 1000km drives after testing the firm's V8 Supercars Altima for the first time
Long-time factory Nissan driver Krumm and GT Academy graduate Ordonez got the chance to test Rick Kelly and James Moffat's V8 Nissans at Winton on Monday as part of the manufacturer's new Global Driver Exchange programme.
Nissan's general manager of motorsport Jeff Fisher said the successful test put Krumm and Ordonez in line for drives in V8 Supercars' trio of endurance races at Sandown, Bathurst and Surfers Paradise next season.
"This test is absolutely significant for Nissan. It opens up V8 Supercars and Altima to the world of Nismo's global motorsports programme. It's very exciting," said Fisher.
"These guys will go back to Nismo in Japan, report on what they've done and they should be in the box seat to come out to Australia for the endurance races next year."
Krumm, whose sportscar accolades include Japanese Super GT and World GT1 titles, said the V8 Altima had been a very different experience, but one he would love to repeat in a competitive situation.
"We prepared well, the team gave us all the information about the car, how it is to drive, but when you actually get it, they are awesome cars," said Krumm.
"The Nissan Altimas have a lot of power and not much downforce, so it's not what I'm used to, but it was much better to drive that I expected.
"Everyone wants to come and race at Bathurst or the Gold Coast, so I'd really love the chance to drive these cars again in the future."
