Zanardi did not allow the seismic life change to derail his ambitions and No Limits documents his quest to participate in one of racing's most arduous events: the 24 Hours of Spa at the esteemed Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
This carefully crafted and artistically shot documentary follows Zanardi and BMW ROAL Motorsport team-mates Timo Glock and Bruno Spengler through their eight-week journey from seat fit to the race, with the film not only about the Italian but the camaraderie and friendship that blossoms between the amiable trio.
Usually unseen footage provides viewers with a chance to understand the complexities of two abled and one disabled athlete sharing the same cockpit, the nuances involved in the seat fittings, and the trio attempting to find the right balance and set-up for their Z4, with in-car radio messages and regular interview segments detailing the importance of meticulous preparation.
On-track footage both from onboard and trackside cameras captures the drama of the 24-hour race and is complemented by garage shots and training footage that convey the mental and physical exhaustion involved in such an event, with Zanardi's exploits understandably the focus for the filmmakers.
For Zanardi, the result of the race is almost an irrelevance compared to its mere undertaking, and the documentary perfectly epitomises his attitude of never giving up, typified in a post-script piece in which just days later he wins the Handcycle World Championship.
The main feature - in English and German - is complemented by a handful of bonus pieces, including Spengler's qualifying lap, the art of the driver change, and Zanardi's preparations for his ultimately fruitful Handcycling title attempt.
No Limits is available from Duke Video for £16.99.
