Stefan Wilson switches to Indy Lights
Former McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Stefan Wilson is to follow his elder brother Justin into the American single-seater scene by switching to Indy Lights for 2009
Wilson took four National class victories in last year's British Formula 3 Championship, having been Formula Palmer Audi runner-up the previous year.
The 19-year-old will drive for the FIRST Motorsports team - which will be run by former Champ Car race winners Walker Racing - in the IndyCar feeder series this season. His deal is currently only for the championship's road course events, although he hopes to add the oval dates if further sponsorship can be found.
"I'm really looking forward to working with (FIRST owner) Jon Lewis and also with Derrick Walker and his staff," said Wilson.
"It's been a tough challenge over the winter to secure enough funding to compete in the road course events, but I'd really like to compete in some of the Indy Lights oval events too, especially the (Indianapolis 500 supporting) Freedom 100, if I can acquire a sponsor in time.
"For now, I'm focusing 100 percent on St Petersburg. I've never driven there, but I'll be tapping into my brother's circuit knowledge. I'm looking forward to a successful season and can't wait to get started."
Justin Wilson has raced in America since 2004, when he joined Conquest Racing's Champ Car team having lost his Jaguar Formula One drive. He is set to drive for Dale Coyne Racing in IndyCar this year.
