Doornbos quickest again at Vallelunga
Robert Doornbos kept his place at the top of the times on the second day of the Superleague Formula's first group test at Vallelunga today
The Dutchman knocked six tenths of a second off his best lap yesterday in the AC Milan car, but was just 0.008s clear of Borussia Dortmund's Davide Rigon at the end of play today.
Enrico Toccacelo was third quickest for AS Roma, and he was just 0.001s ahead of fourth-placed Alessandro Pier Guidi in the Galatasaray car.
Tuka Rocha had his first run in Flamengo's car, setting the fifth quickest time, while Jason Tahinci shared the driving with Pier Guidi for Galatasaray.
Nico Verdonck was the other debutant, but his running in the Anderlecht car was limited when a loose fuel line caused the car to burst into flames in the pits. He escaped uninjured, but the car was destroyed.
Team West-Tec did a handful of installation laps later in the day with Ryan Dalziel in an unliveried car. The British team, who will run the Glasgow Rangers and FC Porto cars, also had Tristan Gommendy and Robbie Kerr at Vallelunga and are expected to undertake more running tomorrow.
The FC Basel car lost a substantial amount of running when Max Wissel crashed, damaging the front wing and suspension.
The Superleague teams have experienced several of the teething problems expected of any new series, with teams struggling to complete long runs because of oil leaks, and drivers complaining about the seating position.
Although the car is larger than many single-seaters, the cockpit is quite cramped. Series bosses may choose to redesign the steering column ahead of the first race to move the wheel further away from the drivers.
