The results of a busy worldwide racing weekend were totally overshadowed by the sad news of 18-year-old Henry Surtees' death following an accident in the second Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch.
The tragedy came just a day after Surtees had taken a breakthrough podium finish, and will leave race winners Philipp Eng and Andy Soucek with unhappy memories of their successes.
F2 was sharing the Brands bill with the World Touring Car Championship, where the title fight closed up thanks to Augusto Farfus' race two victory and Yvan Muller's opening lap tangle in the Chevrolet-dominated race one.
Several other championships saw results that could be pivotal for their title contests, as Gary Paffett moved into the DTM lead, Jules Bianchi and Bertrand Baguette took crucial double wins in the Formula 3 Euro Series and Formula Renault 3.5 respectively, Walter Grubmuller narrowed Daniel Ricciardo's advantage in British F3, and Valentino Rossi stretched his MotoGP lead by winning in Germany.
