Peugeot's first Le Mans win with the 908 was a huge breakthrough for the home team after so much frustration in recent years - especially as it also marked the first time a works Audi team had been defeated at Le Mans in a straight fight since 1999 - but it was not the only significant result of the weekend.
Just a few weeks ago all the talk in the World Rally Championship was about whether Sebastien Loeb would win every round this season. Now, after the world champion's massive Acropolis accident and Mikko Hirvonen's well-judged victory, Loeb's advantage is just seven points and the title fight is on.
Things are even closer in MotoGP, where Valentino Rossi struck back after two poor races by denying his Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo a home win at Catalunya with an astounding last corner move. That result leaves the Yamaha pair and Casey Stoner all tied atop the points table a third of the way into the season.
Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas took his maiden Formula 3 in fine style by conquering the Masters event at Zandvoort, Mark Martin emerged victorious from some last lap NASCAR drama at Michigan, and Colin Turkington took control of the British Touring Car Championship.
