Wickens dominates first F2 event
Robert Wickens completed a perfect weekend at the first round of the Formula 2 championship by winning today's second race at Valencia
The 20-year-old Canadian, who had already taken victory in Saturday's first race, put in another faultless drive from to take away two pole positions and two wins from the first event of the season.
For the second race in succession, Wickens' fellow front row starter made a terrible getaway. This time Andy Soucek bogged down off the line and dropped to fourth, leaving Wickens with an unchallenged run to the first corner.
His fellow Red Bull-backed driver Mirko Bortolotti looked capable of threatening Wickens in the early laps and began to close on the race leader at one point, but Wickens was able to maintain a much stronger pace once the tyres started to wear. By half distance he was building his lead at half a second per lap to earn himself a comfortable run to the finish.
Bortolotti was always clear in second, leaving Philipp Eng to keep Soucek at bay for third. Soucek had reclaimed third from Nicola de Marco half way round the first lap, but he couldn't catch Eng to take back his starting spot.
It was fairly eventless further down the order with Mikhail Aleshin and Edoardo Piscopo having quiet runs to sixth and seventh, and Carlos Iaconelli and Tobias Hegewald climbing to eighth and ninth by overtaking Julien Jousse, who slipped back to 10th.
