Trackrod Rally: Milner claims title
An engine failure on Justin Dale's Super 1600 Peugeot robbed the British Rally Championship of a nail-biting championship finale on the Trackrod Rally, as the path was laid clear for Jonny Milner to take a comfortable victory and the title
Dale's motor died on only the second of the Yorkshire event's 14 stages, handing the title to Milner there and then. His Toyota Corolla WRC went on to win by 1m44.6s.
The Yorkshireman even found time to 'do a Panizzi', wowing his home crowd on SS11 at the Pickering Showground with a spectacular donut, raising huge cheers and a huge cloud of dust. "This means everything to me," said Milner. "I'm absolutely delighted to be crowned champion on my home rally."
Dale was flat in sixth gear on the Givendale stage when his title hopes came to an abrupt end. "We started losing power," he said, "then there was oil all over the windscreen. I shut the engine off but it caught fire."
The best duel of the Trackrod was fought over second place, which was finally settled in favour of the Subaru Impreza of Julian Reynolds and Ieuan Thomas. The Impreza finished 5.5sec ahead of Steve Petch and John Richardson in their Hyundai Accent WRC after the crews had swapped places five times.
Super 1600 was won by the MG ZR of Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson, 46.5sec ahead of the Ford Puma of Guy Wilks and Roger Herron. Kris Meeke and co-driver Glenn Patterson, also in a Puma, completed the class top three.
