Top names among Goodwood runners

Visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which starts today, will be treated to a glimpse of current F1 stars in action

The event boasts its strongest ever line-up of racing drivers past and present.

Event organiser Lord March said, 'We are getting more and more people from overseas, and when you look at the 1970s, '80s and '90s cars, you see that nearly every driver is a real star name.'

Grand Prix stars Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Mika Salo have confirmed appearances, while Jordan's Heinz-Harald Frentzen is a possibility.

Stewart's Barrichello will be trying out a Lotus 79 and a McLaren-Honda MP4/5 - raced by his hero Ayrton Senna.

Salo, a recent stand-in at British American Racing will pilot a 1000bhp Williams-Honda FW11, while on Saturday Coulthard will be driving a pre-war Mercedes W154.

McLaren test driver and Formula 3000 wunderkind Nick Heidfeld will be in last year's world title winning MP4-13.

British Racing legend Stirling Moss will appear alongside Emerson Fittipaldi, Sir Jack Brabham, John Surtees, Rene Arnoux and Patrick Tambay.

Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio II (nephew of the five-time world champion) will both be driving Mercedes Benzs.

Brabham will pilot the Cooper-Climax T51, which gave him his first F1 title 40 years ago.

World Rally Championship drivers Colin McRae and Richard Burns will also be time testing their respective Ford Focus and Subaru Impreza cars on the famous hill.

BMW's winning Le Mans V12 LMR car, driven by Yannick Dalmas, will also join 25 other past winners for a special celebration of the famous endurance race.
