Enaam Ahmed takes early lead in new British Formula 3 era

Enaam Ahmed left the first round of British Formula 3's new era as the points leader after taking three podiums at the Snetterton opener

A late deal in the run-up to the event meant the BRDC Formula 4 Championship was rebadged as British F3 as part of the FIA's drive to reintroduce regional F3 championships.

Ahmed took third in the opening race having started eighth, before improving to second in race two and winning the finale ahead of McLaren Autosport BRDC Award finalist Toby Sowery and MSA Formula champion Lando Norris.

The Douglas Motorsport driver, who was world karting champion in 2014, now leads the F3 standings from Norris by seven points. Norris will miss several F3 rounds due to clashes with his parallel Formula Renault NEC and Eurocup programme.

"I'm delighted to take my first British F3 win and now I've got to maintain that and try to take as many wins as I can," said Ahmed.

Carlin driver Norris had been utterly dominant in the opening race on Saturday, winning by almost 20 seconds in wet conditions.

Brazilian Double R racer Matheus Leist won an eventful race two, climbing from 10th on the grid to lead after two laps.

The next round of the championship takes place at Brands Hatch on April 16/17.
