Double R driver Kiern Jewiss claims 2018 British Formula 4 title

The 16-year-old sealed the crown in race one at Brands Hatch after finishing sixth.

Jewiss headed into the weekend with a significant 62-point lead over closest rival Ayrton Simmons with just 75 points available from the meeting.

Simmons could only finish fifth, after passing the Double R driver at the start, meaning Jewiss was able to secure the crown.

"It means the world to be champion," said Jewiss, who has claimed five wins so far this year.

"Lando Norris has won the championship [in 2015] and now he'll be driving for McLaren in F1 - it would be great to follow in his footsteps.

"I didn't want to make it [the race] interesting!

"Ayrton and I have battled all year and they've been quite hectic so I didn't fight him."

JHR Developments driver Simmons was the man to beat in the early stages of the season.

The 17-year-old is in his third season in the category and that experience showed in the early weekends as he took eight podiums in the first 11 races in a consistent display.

But Jewiss - who was also impressive in his maiden car racing season in Ginetta Junior last year - quickly began to reel Simmons in and assumed a lead he would not relinquish at Oulton Park, the fourth of the 10 meetings.

He gained a reputation for his good pace and excellent overtaking skills, with his stunning victory at Donington Park in race two from 13th on the grid being a particular highlight.

Jewiss moved into a commanding position thanks to a strong weekend in the penultimate event at Silverstone, an incredible double pass on Simmons and Red Bull junior Dennis Hauger out of Luffield on the last lap of race two aiding his cause.

He has yet to decide on which series to race in next year, as he wants to wait for the Regional F3 picture to become clearer first.

Jewiss was the first champion to be crowned among the British Touring Car Championship's support series, with all five titles still up for grabs heading into the Brands finale weekend.

Following Jewiss' success, Charlie Ladell also clinched the Ginetta GT4 Supercup title after an impressive campaign during which he has only been off the podium three times.

One championship that may not be decided at Brands is the Renault UK Clio Cup.

After three-time champion Paul Rivett was controversially excluded from the second Silverstone race for contact with title rival Max Coates, his WDE Motorsport team appealed the decision to the National Court.

The hearing is yet to take place, therefore anyone other than Rivett who leaves Brands with the most points will only be provisionally crowned champion.
