Labonte now holds a 218-point lead over Dale Earnhardt and will take the title if he finishes fifth in Florida, regardless of Earnhardt's result. Labonte ould also take the title if he finishes sixth and leads a lap, or seventh and leads the most laps.

As a worst-case scenario, a pair of 28ths would seal the championship for the Texan, even if Earnhardt wins both races and leads most laps.

Earnhardt's second in the points is far from secured after Jeff Burton's win at Phoenix. Burton is now just eight points behind.
