Waltrip prepares for comeback

Three-time NASCAR champion Darrell Waltrip will come out of retirement to contest this weekend's Busch Series round at Martinsville

Since switching to a commentary role at the end of 2000, Waltrip's only race outings have come in a handful of Craftsman Truck Series starts.

His one-off appearance with brother Michael Waltrip's team on Sunday will be his first Busch Series drive since 1993.

"I've been working pretty hard getting ready for this weekend the last several weeks," said Waltrip.

"It's going to be hot, and that's a huge concern, not only for me, but for a lot of guys.

"Martinsville is a short race track where brake heat, engine heat and shock heat build up. That's probably one of my biggest concerns this week. It's the hottest week that we've had in Nashville, and it's supposed to be the same way in the Carolinas and Virginia."

Waltrip won 84 NASCAR races during a 25-year Cup career, as well as the 1981, '82 and '85 championships. The 59-year-old will test his Michael Waltrip Racing Dodge for the first time at Caraway Speedway today.
