Texas Cup qualifying rained out
The NASCAR Nextel Cup qualifying session for the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway has been cancelled due to severe weather conditions
Chip Ganassi's David Stremme and Hendrick's Kyle Busch had dominated the only practice session held on Friday, which was interrupted by rain.
The second pratice session also had to be cancelled due to rain, and qualifying had initially been rescheduled from 5:10 pm to 7:30 pm.
However, a tornado watch was issued for northern Texas later in the afternoon, forcing NASCAR officials to cancel qualifying.
The starting grid for Sunday's race has therefore been determined by the current owner points standings, which means Jeff Gordon will start from pole for the third time this year, sharing the front row with Jeff Burton.
Eight drivers will miss Sunday's race as a consequence, including four of the Toyotas. David Reutimann, who had been quick in practice, will miss the field as well as Jeremy Mayfield, AJ Allmendinger and Michael Waltrip.
John Andretti, Ward Burton, Scott Wimmer and Kevin Lepage will also pack up without a chance to try and make the grid.
