Target to sponsor Montoya again

Earnhardt Ganassi Racing have confirmed that Juan Pablo Montoya will drive the No.42 Target Chevrolet in the 2009 Sprint Cup series

As autosport.com predicted last week, the Colombian will be reunited with the sponsor for whom he won the Champ Car World Series title in 1999 and the Indianapolis 500 in 2000, during his first stint for Chip Ganassi Racing before heading off to Formula One.

"Target was my first sponsor here in the US and I'm really looking forward to driving a Target car again," said Montoya. "They are a great organisation that I had a lot of great experiences with back in my CART days.

"With the progress we were making toward the end of 2008 the 42 team is poised for a great season and I am really looking forward to Daytona."

Target was initially expected to sponsor the No.41 car as it had for the past few years, but with the team not having a full budget for Montoya and only part-funding from Wrigley's, the move to the No.42 made sense for the organisation.

"I am looking forward to reuniting Target and Montoya," said team owner Chip Ganassi. "They had quite a bit of success in their last stint together and to add Juan to a Team Target that already has (Scott) Dixon and (Dario) Franchitti in the IndyCar Series is going to be great for them.

"Target is a premium full-season sponsor and Montoya is a premium driver and putting them together is the right thing to do for everyone.

"There is little in my racing career I am more proud of than my team's partnership with Target. We will be entering our 20th season with Target in 2009 and we could not be happier with adding Montoya to the Target mix."

Earnhardt Ganassi Racing are currently set to run just three full-time cars, although they still have to complete the sponsorship for the No.8 of Aric Almirola. Montoya's and Martin Truex's cars are fully funded.

The team plan to enter a fourth car for the Daytona 500, for which they have a guaranteed starting spot, but the driver and sponsor for that entry have yet to be revealed.

Montoya will also run in Target colours this weekend when he drives Ganassi's No.01 car in the Rolex 24 sportscar race at Daytona, alongside Grand-Am champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas. Pruett and Montoya are seeking their third straight win in the event, while Ganassi are chasing a fourth consecutive triumph.
