Stewart takes second Winston Cup win

Tony Stewart dominated the Checker Auto Parts/Dura-Lube 500 at Phoenix International Raceway, taking his second NASCAR Winston Cup Series career win

The win should move Stewart into fourth place in the championship points battle.

'This is one place that is always magic for me,' said Stewart, 'and we always run good here." Just as he was when he got his first win at Richmond International Raceway in September, Stewart was calm and happy, almost as if he didn't believe he'd won - again.

Dale Jarrett had a few minutes of frustration around Lap 150 when the right front went flat as he was running in fifth position.

Jarrett couldn't gain entry to pit road the first time by as Stewart was low on the track alongside.

Next time around, Jarrett made his stop and crew chief went for two right-side tyres and fuel.

When Jarrett returned to the track he was a lap down and running 26th.

Needing at least an 18th place finish to more or less ensure he would be awarded the NASCAR Winston Cup trophy in December, Jarrett and crew made up ground on the track and in the pits and finished sixth.

Next week at Homestead Miami Raceway, Jarrett will need to finish 31st or better to put a
lock on his first series title.

'I had a great race car," said a somewhat disappointed Jarret, 'just one of those things...you never know what will happen.

'The guys did a fantastic job in the pits gaining us some position.'

Jarrett's sixth place finish, along with Mark Martin (second), Jeff Burton (fourth) and Ricky Rudd (fifth) handed the Manufacturers' Championship to Ford.

Stewart gave Pontiac its seventh win of the 1999 season.

Unbelievable, yet true, team owner Robert Yates is looking to clinch his first series championship, an opportunity that has eluded him since the battle came down to the wire at Atlanta Motor Speedway in November, 1992.

Driver Davey Allison was in position to take the crown in one of the closest battles in
recent history.

It was not to be, however, as Allison got caught up in Ernie Irvan's wreck and was finished for the day.

Alan Kulwicki went on to win the title over Bill Elliott by just 10 points.

Following Stewart and Martin were Bobby Labonte, J. Burton, Rudd, Jarrett, Kyle
Petty, John Andretti, Wally Dallenbach and Jeff Gordon, who had to battle seven-time series champ Dale Earnhardt for the top-10 finish.
