Andretti takes pole at Phoenix
John Andretti has taken pole for this Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup series race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Andretti won his first pole of the season driving his STP Pontiac for Petty Enterprises, at a speed of 132.714 mph, beating the track record of 131.579 mph set by Bobby Hamilton in 1997.
'I knew I had a good lap, but I didn't know if it was good enough to win the pole,' Andretti said afterwards.
Championship contenders Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte and Mark Martin will all be looking to secure valuable points at Phoenix this weekend.
Jarrett starts from fifth, Labonte from sixth and Martin fourth.
