Stewart takes Richmond win

After being so close a couple of times this season, Tony Stewart took his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series win on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd at Richmond International Raceway.

Stewart dominated the Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400, leading five times for a total of 333 laps at the 0.75-mile D-shaped oval.

He completed a Polish Victory Lap in the tradition of the late Alan Kulwicki to the cheers of 103,000 crowd.

'I wish I knew what to say. You plan all your life for this,' said Stewart.

'This is the first time I'm speechless. This is for Davey Allison.'

Stewart's first career victory came in the 25th start of his rookie season, making him just the sixth driver to accomplish the feat.

Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate Bobby Labonte finished second, making it the first time this season there has been a team 1-2 finish.

'It was a good night for us,' said Labonte. 'Ninety-nine percent (of Labonte) was rooting for me.

'I was trying to catch him. Joe Gibbs Racing has put together two good teams, and I'm glad that Tony is on our side instead of somebody else's side.

'This is a team victory,' Stewart continued.

'This is something Joe Gibbs has been dreaming about -- a one-two victory.'
