Season Finale: A tale of two Gordons

Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon may have dominated the event, but it was Robby Gordon who took the win in a controversial last race of the season at New Hampshire

Robby Gordon tagged his namesake after hitting the wall going into Turn 1, knocking J Gordon into Mike Wallace. In the ensuing yellow flag period Jeff Gordon then ran into the back of Robby's Chevrolet and was given a one-lap penalty for his troubles. A disappointing outcome for the newly crowned champion, who had lead 257 of the 300 laps at New Hampshire.

Robby Gordon then held off a charging Sterling Marlin at the restart on lap 290 to take his first Winston Cup victory.

"I knew I could do it," he said. "The key is to not stop believing in yourself. That you can get to Victory Lane."

Last year's champion Bobby Labonte completed a strong finish to his out-of-sorts title-defending season by coming home third, followed by Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart and Jerry Nadeau.

In the final standings champion Jeff Gordon finishes the season on 5112 points (unofficial), with Stewart maintaining the second place he took from Ricky Rudd in Atlanta last Sunday.

Rudd drops down to fourth in the points table after Marlin's second-placed finish in New Hampshire. Dale Jarrett and Labonte hold the fifth and sixth spots in the standings.
