Sears Point: Rudd inherits victory

Ricky Rudd won his first race of the season, and the 23rd of his career, after erstwhile leader Jerry Nadeau was a late retirement at the Sears Point round of NASCAR's Winston Cup

On lap 107 out of 110, Nadeau held a comfortable 4.4s lead, having moved to the head of the field when he was one of nine drivers who opted not to pit under a late race yellow. However, coming through the final turn of the lap, Nadeau's car ground to a halt and the luckless No.44 driver had to pull off and watch Rudd coast by to victory.

Tony Stewart was gaining on Rudd over those last few laps, but the former IRL man could not deny the leader his fourth road course win. Terry Labonte brought his Pontiac home third, making it three different manufacturers in the prized places.

Despite dropping out after just 19 laps, Sterling Marlin continues to lead the championship. His adversaries all had troubled races; Jimmie Johnson was 35th, Jeff Gordon 37th and Matt Kenseth 39th.

Former CART drivers John Andretti and Robby Gordon went better than usual taking 10th and 11th respectively, but it was a bad race for the road track 'ringers'. Ron Fellows was way back in 25th, while Boris Said was an early retirement when he crashed his Jasper Engines Ford.
