Red Bull to back Toyota team
Energy drink giant Red Bull is to branch out into NASCAR from 2007, supporting a new two-car Toyota team in the Nextel Cup series
The Japanese manufacturer confirmed earlier this week that it would become the first foreign carmaker to enter the North American sport since Jaguar in the 1950s, and the firm has now released details of which teams are going to run its first six cars.
Team Red Bull marks an ever-increasing expansion in top-level motorsport for Dietrich Mateschitz's company, which also owns two Formula One teams and supports many other drivers and racing teams throughout the industry.
The new squad will be based in Mooresville, North Carolina, and stock car veteran Marty Gaunt will serve as the team's general manager. Other details of the squad have yet to be revealed.
Team Red Bull will supplement two-car efforts from both Bill Davis Racing and Michael Waltrip's new Cup team.
In addition to Red Bull, the other primary sponsors for the Toyota machines will include Caterpillar (Bill Davis Racing) and NAPA (Michael Waltrip Racing). Caterpillar has been associated with Bill Davis Racing for nine years and NAPA has had a relationship with Michael Waltrip for five years.
The announcement of Bill Davis Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing comes as no surprise. Bill Davis Racing has fielded three Toyota Tundras in the Craftsman Truck Series for the past two seasons.
