Newman takes pole and crashes

On his first lap he set the fastest time of the day; on his second, he crashed his Dodge car. Ryan Newman won pole position for the Dixies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, but he will start Sunday's race from the back

"Something broke on the right front and it went straight up into the wall," Newman described later, after getting the all-clear from the medical crew.

This was Newman's eighth pole of the seaosn and 35th Nextel Cup career pole. He lapped the 1.5-mile oval with an average speed of 192.947mph.

Second fastest was former Nextel Cup champion Jeff Gordon, with a lap of 192.397mph. Gordon, who is not part of the Chase for the Cup, has never won in Texas before, and he will start tomorrow's race in first.

There was mixed fortunes for the Chase contenders, with points leader Tony Stewart qualifying in 16th, while second-place Jimmie Johnson will start from 10th position, after qualifying in 11th place.

Matt Kenseth and Jeremy Mayfield will be the highest Chase contenders on the grid tomorrow, starting second and fourth respectively, however the two are out of realistic contention for the title, with three races left.
