Mayfield offered Waltrip Toyota deal
Michael Waltrip has offered Jeremy Mayfield a seat in his Toyota team next season
Mayfield, who has made the Chase play-off for the past two seasons, is known to be unhappy with his current team, Evernham Motorsports, after publicly questioning team boss Ray Evernham's commitment to the team last week.
Waltrip is planning to run three Toyota Camrys next season, and has already announced that Dale Jarrett will leave Robert Yates Racing to join himself in the driving line-up. Waltrip is now targeting a third veteran driver for the team.
"The ball's in his court," Waltrip said. "We've got a lot going on next week.
"Hopefully, it will come together and as soon as it does we'll let the world know. We've got a lot of things we need to accomplish between getting him signed and the 2007 season.
"Now we're waiting for him to call us back and tell us if all of that is going to happen or not."
Mayfield, 37, is currently well out of the Chase reckoning and has a year left to run on his Evernham contract.
Last weekend Mayfield criticised Evernham for not being present at selected Nextel Cup races this season.
Veteran Mark Martin also admitted to being approached, however he is unlikely to delay his Nextel Cup retirement a further year.
