Kyle Busch on Richmond Busch pole
Kyle Busch claimed his third Busch Series pole of the year in qualifying for tonight's Emerson Radio 250 at Richmond International Raceway, edging the Roush Fenway cars of Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray
Busch, who won from the pole at this venue in 1994, was one of the late qualifiers of the session and made the most of his run by setting a lap time of 21.361 seconds at an average speed of 126.399 mph around the 0.75-mile oval where he is the track record holder.
Matt Kenseth will start the race from the front row beside Busch, just as he did back in May when he finished second to Clint Bowyer. He was just 20 thousandths of a second slower than Busch, but seven thousandths faster than his Roush Fenway teammate Jamie McMurray who put his Ford third on the grid.
Ryan Newman was fourth ahead of local favorite Denny Hamlin, who had been on the pole in May, while series points leader Carl Edwards, also among the late qualifiers, put his car sixth on the grid.
Kevin Harvick, who was fastest in the final practice session, qualified early and ended up eighth. He won this event a year ago and will start the race from the same position he qualified for the first of his three consecutive victories at Richmond in 2005.
AJ Allmendinger had a good qualifying for his second ever Busch Series race and ended up 12th, while Brad Keselowski, with who he crashed a week ago at Fontana, qualified 15th, running a Hendrick car with an RCR engine under the JR Motorsports banner.
Kertus Davis and Morgan Shepherd failed to qualify, while Venezuelan Alex Garcia did not complete his run, having crashed his car in practice.
