Johnson tops Daytona test

Jimmie Johnson set the fastest time in pre-season NASCAR testing at Daytona yesterday (Tuesday), as the second set of drivers and teams took to the track

The Hendrick Motorsports driver lapped the imposing 2.5mile speedway at an average speed of 187.535mph to claim the day's fastest time. By comparison, Michael Waltrip set the fastest time in last week's test session, lapping at an average of 187.731mph.

John Andretti, Waltrip's DEI team-mate, was second fastest, providing some comfort to the team given its bleak financial situation. DEI has been unable to find a new sponsor for the car following the withdrawal of Pennzoil, and the team cannot guarantee how much it will race following the Daytona 500.

Bill Elliott, who will run a reduced schedule for Evernham Motorsports this season, was third fastest, ahead of fellow veteran Ricky Rudd.

This week's three-day test session is being run for cars which finished in even positions in the 2003 owners points standings.
