Harvick fastest in practice 1
Kevin Harvick showed he will be one of the pace setters in tomorrow's Pole Qualifying session for the Daytona 500, by topping the first of the two final free practice sessions before tomorrow's pole attempts
The Richard Childress Racing driver was the only one to lap in the 188mph bracket in his run, with a 188.399mph lap in his GM Goodrench Chevrolet.
Despite completing just two laps throughout the session, Harvick was more than one mph (0.289s) quicker than any other car in the two-hour session, beating defending Daytona 500 champion Jeff Gordon, who recorded a lap of 187.266mph.
Most teams chose to practice qualifying runs ahead of tomorrow's pole session, however heavy winds limited speeds around the 2.5-mile Super Speedway. Rain is forecast for later today, when the Bud Shootout is scheduled to take place.
Kyle Petty was third quickest in his Petty Enterprises Dodge, ahead of Elliott Sadler and Jimmie Johnson. Dale Jarrett was sixth quickest, with Bill Elliott - the fastest of the drivers who are not automatically guaranteed a spot in next Sunday's Daytona 500 - seventh quickest.
Scott Riggs, in 20th, was the next fastest driver who will also need to qualify on time or race his way into the field, in the prestigious race's complex qualifying system.
