Grapevine: Johnson leads Cup field through NYC
Jimmie Johnson's Chevy Impala SS led a field of ten NASCAR Nextel Cup Series cars that rolled onto the streets of New York on Wednesday as part of the champion's week celebrations
Johnson and the other top ten drivers in the championship drove their cars in a parade through a 1.5-mile layout that started and ended in Times Square, going through some of the city's most recognised avenues.
The 'Victory Lap' took place in the morning and was attended by an estimated 150,000 stunned fans who had the chance to get as close as it gets to the top drivers and cars in NASCAR's top series.
"It's really an honour for us to drive through the streets of New York City and see everybody," said Johnson, who has had a very busy week full of events and appearances in New York since he arrived in town on Sunday.
"That's not your typical crowd - when you see all these people in suits watching you drive by," added Clint Bowyer. "That was definitely a neat thing to see all the fans lining the street and seeing all the work and detail that goes into that."
The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series awards ceremony, where Johnson will officially be crowned as champion for the second year in a row, will take place on Friday night at the Waldorf Astoria's Grand Ballroom.
