Gordon takes controversial win

Jeff Gordon took his first ever win at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday night in controversial manner, the former Cup champion spinning out his nemesis Matt Kenseth just seven laps to the end

Gordon caught up with race leader Kenseth on lap 263, and going into Turn 2, he tapped Kenseth's rear bumper, sending the Ford driver into a spin.

Gordon and Kenseth ran into a similar situation earlier this year in Bristol.

"I hate to win one like that," Gordon said after Sunday's race. "I got in there real hard and Matt blocked me a little bit. I was trying to get the best run I could and I got into him.

"I know that will take away from this win, but it shouldn't take away from how good this car was and how hard these guys fought. I think I could have won either way.

"He blocked me, and I couldn't believe he was doing that."

Gordon's win means he is now tenth in the Cup standings, putting him among the provisional list of candidates for the Chase, which begins in September.

Second behind Gordon in Chicago was pole-sitter Jeff Burton, followed by Kyle Busch in third and Kevin Harvick in fourth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was fifth, with points leader Jimmie Johnson sixth.

Kenseth, who spun out again in the final lap after crashing with David Stremme, finished 21st.
