Gordon scoops fourth Winston Cup

A top six finish in Sunday's NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway was more than enough for Jeff Gordon to wrap up his fourth NASCAR Winston Cup title. He joins seven-time champions Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers to have reached that level of success in US stock car racing's premier category

Gordon clinched the championship in front of an estimated 96,000 fans on a mild Georgia afternoon. After the race, he remembered Earnhardt, the seven-time champ who was killed in the season-opening Daytona 500 on February 18.

"All year long, we have been honouring America and honoring heroes and I would like to honour a real hero in Dale Earnhardt," said Gordon. "We miss him a lot and we are proud to get this Winston Cup championship. I know if he was here, he would be coming over here giving us congratulations on this championship.

"I'm just blown away," he added. "It's our fourth time doing this, each one gets sweeter. I want to say what a true class act Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett and Tony Stewart were in this battle for the championship. They were just incredible this year. We had a back-up engine in there, and you would have never known it today."
