Gordon quickest in Lowe's test

Jeff Gordon topped the timesheet at the official two-day Sprint Cup test at Lowe's Motor Speedway, where teams ran in preparation for the coming intermediate tracks in the Chase

The Hendrick driver set a fastest lap of 28:841 at an average speed of 187.233mph in the final night session on Wednesday, where most of the fastest laps were set.

Second, and backing up his strong performance from Tuesday, was Scott Speed, whose fastest lap was less than a tenth of a second slower than Gordon's benchmark. His best lap was also set under the lights on Wednesday as were those of the six fastest drivers over the two days.

"I'm playing catch-up here," Speed said. "There's absolutely no substitute for experience. In a series like this, where everyone's got so much of it and I'm coming in with so little, every week I have to be out racing or driving, it's really quite helpful."

Denny Hamlin was third, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya who ran well on both days and emerged as the fastest Dodge runner of the test, nearly two tenths off Gordon's time. He was followed by Gillett Evernham's Elliot Sadler and points leader Carl Edwards.

Greg Biffle, winner of the first two races of the Chase, also ran strongly on both days, setting the fastest overall lap on the first day and again in the afternoon session of day two.

He ranked 11th fastest in the final night session, but his best lap from Tuesday left him seventh overall.

"We unloaded with the All-Star and Coca-Cola 600 setup in the car," said Biffle. "We figured that was a great place to start since we finished second in both of those events, and the car is super-easy to drive and has a lot of speed. I'm pretty happy about that for starters."

Sam Hornish Jr was eighth fastest for Penske Racing, followed by Mike Skinner who filled in for AJ Allmendinger in the No.84 Red Bull Toyota.

Jeremy Mayfield rounded out the top ten in the No.41 Ganassi car as the team evaluated him as a candidate to replace the outgoing Reed Sorenson.

Also high on the timesheet was rookie Brad Keselowski, who finished 12th in the No.25 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy which he will attempt to qualify for his Sprint Cup debut in three weeks.

Bryan Clauson, testing a third Ganassi car, was 14th fastest ahead of Stephen Leicht, who drove a fourth car for Richard Childress over the two days.

A total of 52 drivers completed laps over the two days, which ran without any incidents.
