Ford's Jarrett ends Chevy domination
After 400 miles of racing at 'The Track Too Tough To Tame', Darlington Speedway, Ford's Dale Jarrett finally ended Chevrolet's 100 percent winning streak in 2001 with victory in round five of NASCAR's Winston Cup
Jarrett's Robert Yates Racing Taurus trailed Steve Park's Dale Earnhardt Inc Chevy Monte Carlo in the closing stages of the 293-lap race at the egg-shaped South Carolina track, but took the lead with a quicker pit stop when the caution flags flew for debris with just 17 laps remaining.
At the restart, Jarret held off round two winner Park in a 10-lap sprint to the flag, with the Fords of Jeremy Mayfield and 'Mr Excitement' Jimmy Spencer coming in third and fourth, ahead of Sterling Marlin's Dodge.
Earlier in the proceedings, the race was red-flagged for 10 minutes when Mike Skinner's Chevy hit the Turn 3 wall and collected Terry Labonte's Chevy in a fiery collision. Neither driver was hurt, but oil and coolant on the track caused a mammoth clean-up operation.
Triple champion Jeff Gordon, who came into Darlington with the points lead, was sidelined by engine failure, leaving 1999 Winston Cup champ Jarrett at the head of the field.
