Daytona day 2: Mayfield on top
Jeremy Mayfield pushed his Dodge to the top of the time charts on the second day of testing at Daytona Beach, Florida on Wednesday
Mayfield, who moved from Roger Penske's Winston Cup team to replace Casey Atwood at Evernham Motorsports, set a quickest time of 183.221mph to finish ahead of Michael Waltrip's Chevrolet and Atwood's Dodge.
It was an ideal way for Mayfield to start things off with his new team after a disappointing final year with Penske.
"I haven't been in a race car for a while [October], but it feels like yesterday now," said Mayfield. "They've been so good about taking me and making me feel like this has been my home for a long time. I've never seen a bunch of guys work as hard as these guys do."
Although the majority of teams brought two cars down to Daytona for testing, the Evernham squad put all its resources into Atwood's solitary Dodge.
"A lot of times it's good to have two cars," said Atwood. "It's good to see which one is faster. Just throwing all this together so quickly, we could only get one car down here, but it seems to be a pretty good one. It's my first test with these guys and to be that fast is real exciting."
Tuesday's pacesetter, Jerry Nadeau, finished the day sixth fastest as the Dodges and Chevrolets maintained their dominance from day one. The Fords, meanwhile, continued to struggle, with Rusty Wallace the quickest of the Blue Oval runners with a lap of 181.452mph.
Champ Car star Kenny Brack, who got his first run in a NASCAR Winston Cup car on Tuesday, finished 18th quickest with a speed of 181.123mph.
Testing continues on Thursday after Monday's session was lost to rain. Teams are likely to use the afternoon session for drafting tryouts.
