Busch Series: Martin and Gordon call time
NASCAR stars Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon will make their last-ever Busch Grand National starts at Homestead on Saturday
Martin has become the most successful driver in the category's history, winning 45 races and $2.5 million in prize money. But the 41-year-old, who underwent major back surgery at the start of the season, has decided to call time and concentrate on capturing that elusive Winston Cup title success.
"I'm gonna miss Busch racing, but I just don't have time to do it anymore," said Martin. "I will be relieved when I get Miami done with, but at the same time I will miss the success that I've had and the way it makes me feel."
Three-time Winston Cup champion Gordon scored 11 poles in 1992 as he battled his way through the ranks, eventually scoring four wins in the category. He is less attached to the series, however.
"I can't say it's a big emotional thing like Mark," he said. "He has won a whole bunch of races and it's been something that's been a big part of his racing career. For me, the Busch Series is what got me into Winston Cup."
