Busch: points lead means nothing
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader Kyle Busch says his current position at the top of the standings has little significance, and he prefers to focus his efforts on getting his car to victory lane
Busch jumped to the top of the point standings for the first time in his Cup career following two consecutive fourth places at Daytona and Fontana. However, he refuses to get carried away by the numbers at such an early stage of the season.
"It doesn't mean much right now," Busch said. "If the championship was paid for: 'woo hoo, yeah for us', But we've still got 33 weeks left in this deal. We'll take it now and hopefully hold on to it for a while and keep battling with the (number) 24, 48 (cars) - we know they'll come back strong in the points. There's going to be some other contenders, too."
The younger of the Busch brothers, who is in his debut season with Joe Gibbs Racing following three years driving for Hendrick Motorsports, says he keeps his focus on trying to win his first race for his new team.
He says his current results are a reflection of how good his cars have been in the first two races of the season, where he has led more laps than any other driver, completing 100 laps up front.
"The biggest thing we try to do is to get results and get wins - that is the optimum thing that you want to do it to get your team to victory lane," Busch said. "For me, I just go out there and do what my car can do. If it's a 20th place car, then I finish 20th on those days and if it's a 30th place car then I normally wreck it.
"With a top-five car, I can finish up there and on a bad day, then it's a top-10. It's more about what your car will give you."
Busch currently also leads the points in the Craftsman Truck Series and is second in the Nationwide Series standings as well. However, he is not currently scheduled to compete in every race in either series.
He has finished in the top ten in his last three appearances in the Sprint Cup at his native Las Vegas, where he looks to defend his points lead this weekend.
