Mears replaces Vickers for All-Star

Casey Mears will replace Red Bull Racing's Brian Vickers in this weekend's All Star race after NASCAR allowed the team to make a driver change

Casey Mears will replace Red Bull Racing's Brian Vickers in this weekend's All Star race after NASCAR allowed the team to make a driver change.

Vickers earned his entry into the event thanks to his maiden victory for Red Bull last year at Michigan, but continues to be treated for blood clots discovered last week before the Cup event at Dover.

Mears replaced him last Sunday after being called up at short notice, but the Californian doesn't fit the selection criteria to be eligible to participate in the non-points event next Saturday at Charlotte.

However NASCAR has allowed Red Bull to put Mears in the car due to the circumstances forcing Vickers' absence.

"Given the extenuating circumstances we have dealt with this past week regarding Brian's health, we would like to thank NASCAR for their assistance and understanding of this unique situation by allowing us to compete in the All-Star Race," said Jay Frye, the team's general manager and vice president.

Vickers, who returned home last week and continues to undergo evaluation, is expected to speak to the media next Friday at Charlotte Motorspeedway.
