Tony Stewart to return to NASCAR action at Atlanta this weekend
Three-time NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart will return to racing this weekend for the first time since he was involved in a Sprint Car crash that killed another driver
Stewart has missed the last three Cup races since the incident on August 9, where his car hit Kevin Ward Jr as the 20-year-old stood on the track after crashing out.
His Stewart-Haas team said last weekend that it was not sure when its boss would be back in action, but he is set to return to NASCAR competition at Atlanta this weekend.
NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell said: "Tony Stewart has received all necessary clearances required to return to all racing activities, and therefore is eligible to compete this weekend.
"NASCAR has remained in constant contact with his race team, and we will stay very close to this situation as Stewart returns to competition."
Stewart has slipped to 26th in the Cup standings during his absence, and as he has not won a race so far this year he is currently ineligible for the new Chase for the championship format that will decide the title.
The investigation into the incident that resulted in Ward's death is ongoing.
