Anderlecht's Rigon wins Zolder final
Belgian club Anderlecht scored a home victory at Zolder on Sunday, its Italian star Davide Rigon netting the €100,000 first prize in the five-lap super final
The start of the race was chaotic, as pole man Chris van der Drift (Olympiacos) lined up ahead of his grid slot and was unable to reverse into it in time. That meant he led on the run to the first corner, but Rigon dived past him on the inside.
Only Rigon and van der Drift had saved new tyres for this race, and they pulled well clear of the other four cars. Rigon won despite a big lock-up into Bolderbergbocht on the final lap, ahead of van der Drift.
"It's fantastic," said Rigon. "We were fast in both races today, and it's great to win for my team at home."
Van der Drift said of his startline disaster: "If I got reverse, the lights would have gone out, and I'd have been in reverse! When you stop on the grid, you have to go on the lights, or you'll miss the start."
Race two winner Julien Jousse finished third for Roma, ahead of Tristan Gommendy (Galatasaray), Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) and Max Wissel (Basel). Buurman's overtaking move on Wissel at Turn 1 on lap two was the only pass of the race after the opening lap.
Buurman now leads Tottenham's Craig Dolby by eight points after the Briton's disastrous second race at the halfway point of the season.
