Mowlem: Hybrid's potential is huge
Johnny Mowlem believes there is a lot more to come from the electro hybrid technology used in Corsa Motorsports' Ginetta Zytek after the car's podium at Lime Rock last weekend
Running in full hybrid configuration for the first time, the Corsa machine finished third in the American Le Mans Series race behind the two LMP1 Acuras.
Mowlem, who shares the car with Stefan Johansson, said he had not expected things to run so smoothly on the new system's debut.
"It was an historic moment," he said, "Simply unbelievable that given how new all this technology is, that we ran the whole race reliably and with no real issues."
Although Corsa finished seven laps behind the Acuras on the short Lime Rock circuit, Mowlem said the team had barely started working on performance yet.
"The car raced well," he said. "We have more development work to do with the hybrid power as well as sorting all the various car handling issues that this technology brings with it, but we know there is tremendous potential from a competitive point of view.
"Perhaps more importantly, every advancement we make with this racing package will eventually find its way to road vehicles on the public roads, which is a huge part of all this."
