Seven non-European nations want WTCC
KSO, the promoter of the European Touring Car Championship, has opened negotiations with venues in Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in its bid to gain FIA 'World' status in 2005. KSO is seeking to maintain competitor costs at the level currently needed for 10 races in Europe, while substantially increasing the marketing benefits for manufacturers. Nevertheless, the fixture list could be increased to 12 events on three continents
The 2005 calendar is expected to comprise one or two non-European events early in the season, followed by eight or nine European events and then by one or two non-European events to close the season. The championship is expected to retain fixtures in Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and/or Spain and the UK.
This season Alfa Romeo, BMW and SEAT will compete in the fourth season of the revived ETCC, with private entries representing Honda and newcomers Ford and Peugeot.
The FIA Touring Car Championship is part of the LG Super Racing Weekend package which also includes the FIA GT series, and is broadcast to 54 countries on Eurosport and on 200 other channels worldwide.
