Stoner fastest in extended second session

Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner topped the second MotoGP free practice session for the San Marino Grand Prix today

With this morning's dry session extended to two hours after yesterday's downpour caused the cancelation of Misano Adriatico's afternoon running, championship leader Stoner was the only rider breaking the 1 minute 35 seconds barrier with a time of 1:34.714.

Valentino Rossi challenged the Australian and often managed to top the timesheets with his Fiat Yamaha, but ultimately fell short by getting the second best time, just over half a second behind his rival.

Anthony West was a surprise third with his Kawasaki, 0.352 behind Rossi. Honda LCR's Carlos Checa set the fourth fastest time, six hundredths of a second behind West.

Rossi's teammate Colin Edwards and Rizla Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen, fifth and sixth fastest respectively, just managed to stay within one second of Stoner's best time.

Randy de Puniet was seventh on the other Kawasaki, followed by the two Repsol Hondas of Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa. Stoner's teammate Loris Capirossi rounded up the top ten.

After topping yesterday morning's practice, Marco Melandri suffered a high-speed tumble today, but he was eventually allowed to rejoin the last ten minutes of the session on his spare bike after being examined at Clinica Mobile.
