Jorge Lorenzo: I deserve MotoGP title regardless of controversy

Lorenzo overhauled Rossi's seven-point advantage in the deciding Valencia Grand Prix, winning ahead of Honda pair Marquez and Dani Pedrosa while his Yamaha team-mate and title rival could only reach fourth from his back of the grid start.

Despite allegations that Marquez gave him an easy path to victory on Sunday, Lorenzo said no-one could begrudge him the title given he had won seven races to Rossi's four.

"People who really know about motorbikes understand my value as a rider and a champion," said Lorenzo.

"They will be happy with my achievement.

"Obviously people who support another rider, in this case Valentino, will never be happy about this championship.

"But a champion is a champion, and a champion who has my statistics this year deserves the championship, in my opinion.

"We beat him in everything: in victories, in pole positions, in fastest laps, in laps leading the races, in leading practice sessions. Everything.

"Only in podiums and consistency did he beat us, and a little bit because of circumstances.

"In some races I could have finished first or second but it rained and I couldn't get the best result.

"These races and the fact the beginning of my season was bad meant I could have arrived at Valencia 20, 30 or even 40 points ahead. This is clear.

Lorenzo also argued that Rossi's final deficit to the front at Valencia showed his grid penalty made no difference to the title outcome.

"He didn't have anything to lose, he could just push at the limit and take risks, but he finished 20 seconds behind us," Lorenzo argued.

"With my speed and determination I demonstrated clearly that I deserve this championship and I hope everyone respects the final result."

Rossi was 13s off the lead when he reached fourth place on lap 13 of the 30-lap race, and ended up 19.7s adrift.

"I wasn't particularly fast," Rossi admitted, "but it's also true that with the new tyre at the beginning I was in traffic and trying to overtake so I could not give my maximum.

"If I could start in a normal grid position I could try to do something, try to fight with Jorge."

Lorenzo added that the controversies of the title run-in would not take the shine off his achievement.

"Of course I would especially prefer that there were not these polemics of the press, trying to make inventions in the news that were not true, and what happened with Marc and Valentino at Sepang was better to avoid," he said.

"But these things cannot shadow my performance and my level of riding this year.

"This will not affect my pride about this world championship."
