Barcelona MotoGP: Bradley Smith quickest in second practice

The Tech 3 Yamaha rider was one of two satellite team underdogs to star in the session, as he fended off LCR Honda's Stefan Bradl by 0.007 seconds.

Smith's 1m42.123s lap was half a second shy of Aleix Espargaro's Friday benchmark from the morning session.

Championship leader Marc Marquez had led into the closing minutes before Smith and Bradl set their times.

After a low-key morning, it had taken until halfway through the afternoon for Marquez's Honda to make its first appearance atop the timesheets, the Spaniard deposing Bradl just after the German had moved into a brief tenure in first place.

The Yamahas had led the way initially again, this time with Valentino Rossi heading Jorge Lorenzo.

But Rossi did not improve on his early 1m42.629s in the latter stages and fell to sixth.

All four Factory class Yamahas were still in the top six, with Lorenzo and Smith's team-mate Pol Espargaro fourth and fifth.

Andrea Dovizioso was top Ducati in seventh, just ahead of Pramac duo Yonny Hernandez and Andrea Iannone, while Dani Pedrosa only managed 10th on the second works Honda.

Morning pacesetter Aleix Espargaro was way back in 12th. His final run had been spoilt when he had a massive moment at the last corner while trying to catch Michael Laverty for a slipstream, and then went wide over the run-off at Turn 1.

After successfully completing opening practice, Nicky Hayden covered another 17 laps in the afternoon, although the American - who is assessing whether he is fit to race after recent surgery - was only 18th.
