Misano MotoGP: Marc Marquez fastest in first practice

Marc Marquez edged out Jorge Lorenzo in first practice for MotoGP's San Marino Grand Prix at Misano

The Honda rider was quickest for the majority of the session at a track where Yamaha has dominated in recent years.

Marquez's 1m33.328s was within a tenth of last year's pole time on the resurfaced circuit, and it beat Lorenzo's best effort for Yamaha by 0.094 seconds.

Ducati has entered a third bike for its test rider Michele Pirro on home ground, and the Italian starred - as a track he knows very well from his development duties - with the third-fastest time.

Pirro's works team-mates Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone were fifth and 10th.

Championship leader and 2014 Misano winner Valentino Rossi ended the morning sixth behind Dani Pedrosa and Dovizioso, just ahead of Tech 3 Yamaha team-mates Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith and LCR Honda's Cal Crutchlow.

The Suzukis struggled - Maverick Vinales 14th and Aleix Espargaro way down in 19th.

The session ran 10 minutes later than planned due to a red flag for a terrifying crash in the preceding Moto3 practice.

Silverstone polesitter Jorge Navarro fell at the fast Turn 11 right-hander and was immediately hit at high speed by the closely-following Lorenzo Dalla Porta.

Navarro required medical attention at the scene but was conscious and has been taken to hospital for a CT scan and assessment of left shoulder injuries.

MotoGP had a dramatic accident of its own when Forward rider Claudio Corti lost control in the same section.

The Italian walked away unhurt after being thrown clear of his bike, which landed on top of the tyre wall when it finished its high-flying tumble through the gravel.
