125cc: Zanetti surprises with provisional pole

Lorenzo Zanetti came out top of a thrilling battle for provisional pole in Friday's first qualifying session for the 125cc grand prix at Indianapolis

Zanetti, the surprise of the session whose best qualifying position so far this year was 19th at Assen, produced a 1:58.884 on his final flier in damp conditions to pip Donington-winner Scott Redding to the fastest time.

Andrea Iannone was another to feature in the battle for pole, but as a dry line began to emerge late in the session, so his challenge faded and he ended up third, ahead of championship leader Mike de Meglio and the tiny Marc Marquez.

Sandro Cortese was sixth quickest ahead of Stefan Bradl, who won at Assen and Britain's Bradley Smith, who is still searching for his first win.

Efren Vasquez and Nicolas Terol completed the top ten, while reigning world champion and man in-form Gabor Talmacsi ended the session 11th following an early fall in the rain.

The Hungarian was able to walk away unaided, but not without limping, raising some doubt about whether he will be able to repeat his Misano victory this weekend.
