125cc: Talmacsi takes provisional pole
The two riders who top the championship points standing topped the times in opening 125cc qualifying for the Australian round of the MotoGP world championship at Phillip Island
Championship leader Gabor Talmacsi topped the times early in the session, before his closest title rival Hector Faubel took over at the top with eight minutes remaining in the session.
With three minutes remaining Tomoyoshi Koyoma moved to the top, only to be immediately demoted by Talmacsi with a time of 1:39.134. Any chance of Talmacsi improving on that time ended when he fell in the final minute of the session.
However, Faubel was still on track and on the pace. His final lap, set after the chequered flag had fallen, was a 1:39.178, second fastest and just 0.034 of a second slower than Talmacsi.
Koyama ended the session third fastest, just hundredths of a second ahead of Mattia Pasini, Sergio Gadea and Lukas Pesek, with Raffaele de Rosa and Lorenzo Zanetti close behind. Michael Ranseder and Simone Corsi completed the top ten.
