125cc: Pasini tops first qualifying

A week after taking his first victory of the 2007 season, Mattia Pasini secured provisional pole position for the 125cc Dutch Grand Prix at Assen

The Italian has already claimed five poles this year, but a variety of misfortunes in the races meant that his first win did not come until last week's Donington Park round.

Simone Corsi had held pole at the halfway point of the session, before first Lukas Pesek, then Pasini pushed him down the order.

Erstwhile championship leader Pesek - showing better form after two frustrating races - improved to within 0.18 seconds of Pasini right at the end of the session, but could not separate the Italian from pole.

Corsi retained third, ahead of Sergio Gadea, Sandro Cortese, and title rivals Gabor Talmacsi and Hector Faubel.

Further down the top ten, German rider Stefan Bradl set himself up for a career-best starting position by taking ninth.

The Red Bull KTM team struggled relative to their recent strong performances, with Tomoyoshi Koyama only 13th, and Randy Krummenacher ending up behind teammate Steve Bonsey in 25th following a fall early in the session.

Both Bradley Smith and Andrea Iannone sat out first qualifying after their collision in practice, with Smith now ruled out for the weekend due to metacarpal and metatarsal fractures, and Iannone nursing a hand injury.
