125cc: Olive steals provisional pole
Joan Olive took provisional pole position in the 125cc class at Motegi in a session which saw times tumble dramatically in the closing minutes
Olive had topped the times just after halfway through the half-hour session, but it was not long after he set this time that the action at the front picked up. In the final ten minutes of the session, the fastest time dropped by just under five seconds.
In the final five minutes of the session, there were six provisional polesitters, as Marc Marquez went to the top, followed by Sergio Gadea, Andrea Iannone, Esteve Rabat, Gadea again, Olive, Nicolas Terol before Olive finally grabbed the position after the chequered flag had fallen.
Even then his position was not secure as three other riders took the second-fastest time after Olive had clinched the top spot, Bradley Smith taking second ahead of championship leader Mike di Meglio, with Dominique Aegerter and Pol Espargaro completing the top five.
Terol, who was on pole when the chequered flag fell, ended up sixth-fastest, just ahead of reigning 125cc champion Gabor Talmacsi. Marquez, who was on pole with five minutes remaining, tumbled down the order to finish up fifteenth.
Di Meglio's closest challenger for the championship, Simone Corsi, didn't have a great day and ended up two and a half seconds off the pace in 21st place.
