125cc: Koyama celebrates first victory
Tomoyoshi Koyama took his first 125cc victory with a final lap move in a dramatic Catalan Grand Prix
The Red Bull KTM rider worked his way through the lead pack to move into contention for the win in the closing stages, before thrusting his bike past Sergio Gadea three corners from the end.
Gabor Talmacsi emerged in second in the final lap shuffle, and moves into a clear championship lead after his title rivals Hector Faubel and Lukas Pesek collided with four laps to go.
Randy Krummenacher completed a superb day for Red Bull KTM by taking his maiden podium in third, having led for the first time in his short MotoGP 125cc career.
The Bancaja Aspar Aprilia riders had dominated the first half of the race, with Talmacsi, Faubel and Gadea monopolising the lead battle, running first, second and third while battling furiously with each other.
Koyama and Pesek briefly intruded on the Aspar dice, as did the charging Pol Espargaro, who was celebrating his 16th birthday by surging through the field from 18th on the grid. Espargaro even hit the lead after half-distance, but would lose touch with the leaders in the final laps.
With four laps to go, Talmacsi's title chances were handed a massive boost when Pesek clipped the back of points leader Faubel's bike at Turn 10, causing both to fall. While Pesek was able to rejoin and finish 13th, Faubel could not continue.
At the same time the KTM riders were really making their presence felt, with Krummenacher leading for the first time and running one-two with Koyama.
After some more shuffling with the Aspar bikes, the Red Bull duo were in front going into the last lap, only for Gadea to slip down the inside of both and into the lead into the first corner.
But Koyama stayed behind the Spaniard and dived inside at Turn 10, sending Gadea wide and down to fourth in the process. Talmacsi benefited and slipped through to second, but could not deny Koyama his first victory.
Behind Krummenacher and Koyama, Espargaro was thrilled to take fifth, while Bradley Smith finished a lonely sixth having drifted away from the leaders after half-distance.
The luckless Mattia Pasini was part of the front group initially, but crashed at the first corner on lap three. He then proceeded to take his frustrations out on his bike - furiously kicking and stamping on the damaged machine as he trudged out of the gravel trap.
