Moto2: Lorenzo fastest in first qualifying

Aprilia rider Jorge Lorenzo has taken provisional pole position in the 250cc class for this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai after a close tussle for the top spot

Lorenzo was on top early before Alex de Angelis went nearly a second faster in the opening ten minutes of the 45 minute session. With 25 minutes remaining Lorenzo took nearly a second off de Angelis's best with a 2:05.984, lowering the mark to 2:05.960 on his next lap.

With 20 minutes remaining Julian Simon took pole with a 2:05.890, Lorenzo immediately following with a 2:05.941 to improve his best but remained second. However, just as he had done earlier, he went faster on his next lap, to reclaim pole with a 2:05.849.

With eight minutes remaining Alvaro Bautista took over the top spot with a 2:05.650, but twenty seconds later Lorenzo cemented his provisional pole with a lap of 2:05.276. While Simon managed to improve his time to move up to second fastest in the final five minutes, no-one got close to Lorenzo's best.

Bautista, Andrea Dovizioso and Hector Barbera completed the top five. Alex de Angelis was sixth fastest but nearly 1.5 seconds off the pace after a crash with 12 minutes remaining ended any hopes of a top five effort.
