Magazine: Gasly's remarkable F1 Italian GP triumph

Pierre Gasly's remarkable win in the Italian Grand Prix is the focus of Autosport magazine this week, out today (10 September)

Autosport Magazine

Autosport is the UK's must-read motorsport magazine! It is revered by fans and industry personnel alike as the ultimate source of motorsport news and analysis.

Shock results in Formula 1 don't happen very often anymore, thanks to the reliability of the cars, but incidents and a pitlane blunder from Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes opened the door for others at Monza.

As Alex Kalinauckas shows in our report, Gasly's win wasn't just about luck. The AlphaTauri driver had to withstand increasing pressure from the chasing McLaren of Carlos Sainz in the closing stages. Given Gasly's turbulent year since being dropped by Red Bull, many were happy to see him succeed, and we ask whether a return to the senior squad alongside Max Verstappen is really the Frenchman's best option.

Sainz is the subject of our big interview in the issue. Having signed for Ferrari, the Spaniard is now having to watch the famous Italian team slide down the field - behind the McLaren squad he will leave in 2021.

But, as Sainz tells us, he doesn't regret the decision and is already looking forward to working alongside Charles Leclerc and preparing for F1's long-awaited new regulations in 2022.

Outside of F1, Antonio Felix da Costa has been one of the stars of 2020. In our Formula E season review, Matt Kew explains how DS Techeetah was once again the team to beat, and why da Costa defeated his double champion team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne.

As one championship has concluded, another has burst back into life last weekend. The World Rally Championship restarted with its first visit to Estonia and our report covers home hero Ott Tanak's fine victory. It was the reigning world champion's first win for Hyundai and he is now just 13 points behind leader Sebastien Ogier, the man who filled his vacated Toyota seat.

There's also the usual round-up of international and UK news and events, plus we take a look at the 70-year battle to contain the speed of F1 cars, following Hamilton's record-breaking 164.3mph pole lap at Monza.
